INTRODUCTORY NOTE

The suffering of people in the struggle for survival starts from the beginning of history. War, violence, violence against women, among others, are unfortunately timeless and topical issues. Ariadne Gartziou-Tattis and Eleni Alexandris in their paper “Prisoners of war in the Athenian tragic scene of the 5th century BC”, “through two examples of Athenian theatrical production of the 5th century BC. The Troades and Euripides’ Hecuba” vividly illustrate “the plight and violence faced by all unnamed women living in captivity”. But the human spirit continues to create and evolve despite all the suffering. In a time of war, Group Analysis was created by its father S.H. Foulkes, whose journey and his bright spirit that led him to “a radical for the time and revolutionary for his psychoanalytic culture attempt to implement a multidisciplinary reading of the human condition”, is recalled by Sophia Maria Moraitou in her presentation “S.H. Foulkes: the father of Group Analysis”. The human spirit dreams, creates myths as “cultural ‘dreams’ that lead, through cumulative, very long chains of intergenerational transmissions, to the construction and reconstruction of mythical collective ideals” tells us Nikos Lamnidis in his paper “What we can learn from the metamorphoses of Ovid and Kafka” and analyses in psychoanalytical terms the concept of metamorphoses. Man’s struggle against suffering and the forces of death is promisingly revealed in a reading of the myth of Sisyphus, as presented to us by Katerina Miliou in her paper “The importance of transitional space and the perpetual consciousness-consciousness dialectic for the preservation of hope in the myth of Sisyphus”. While the presentation of the theme of the “18th International Symposium GASi 2023” by Fotis Yiotakis, the “Proposals of the Introductory Seminar 2022-2023 of IOAF” by Kostas Konstantopoulos and the “Book Proposal” by the working group for the publication of the Bulletin leads us to hopeful anticipation for a better New Year!
