Training

The Institute of Group Analysis ‘S.H. Foulkes’ (IOAF) provides a four-year training course addressed to psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and generally to mental health and related professionals.

Requirements for inclusion in training

  1. Completion of the Introductory Seminar.
  2. Initiation of personal group-analytic psychotherapy in a mixed (with patients) analytic group, bi-weekly, with a regular member of IOAF, which will continue at least until the end of the training and the writing of the final thesis.
  3. Clinical Experience: Trainees are expected to have clinical experience in the initial phase of training. The Institute is available to facilitate in this direction.
  4. Good command of English language.

The Education

The training includes weekly or biweekly theoretical seminars, group and individual supervision, the writing of annual papers and a final dissertation.

The theoretical seminars deal extensively with clinical and theoretical issues of Group Analysis and basic psychoanalytic issues, as well as with psychotherapeutic and group analytic technique. In addition, they deal with psychopathology issues and clinical/research documentation.

The writing of the annual theory papers is supported by the seminars and by the trainee’s personal tutor. For the writing of the final dissertation the trainee may join a writing seminar available for this purpose.

How can i apply for the Training?

Either through the online form on this page or by sending a request to the IOAF Training Committee at the Institute’s email address info@ioaf.eu.

Training Application Procedure

Following the submission of the application form two interviews follow. One individual interview with one member of the Training Committee and one with all the members. The fee for participating in the interviews is 70,00 euros

If the candidate is accepted, he/she can start training in September of the following academic year.

The new trainee may also apply for student membership of GASI.

How can I become a member of IOAF?

After successfully completing the training, the new Group Analyst can apply to the IOAF Board of Directors to become an associate member of the Institute and a full member of GASI.

What is the cost?

The total cost for the academic year 2025-26 will be 2.500 €.
